Meet Devil’s Bedstead: The New Kid on the Sunnyslope Wine Trail

There’s a new name making its way around the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, and despite the name, you don't have to sell your soul to get a good glass of wine. Say hello to Devil’s Bedstead Winery!

Located on Hoskins Road in Caldwell, Devil’s Bedstead is one of the newer stops on the Sunnyslope Wine Trail—but don't let the “new” part fool you. There are some pretty deep Idaho wine roots behind this place. And around here, we like a winery with a little history, a little personality, and a good story to tell.

Devil’s Bedstead is named after a mountain in Idaho's Pioneer Mountains near Sun Valley. Honestly, if you're going to name a winery after an Idaho mountain, you might as well pick one with a name people won't forget. It's a name that fits right in around here. Idaho has never been accused of being boring.

New Winery. Old Idaho Roots.

While Devil’s Bedstead is a newer addition to the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, the folks behind it have been making Idaho wine for decades. Greg and Kristen Koenig have been part of Idaho's wine industry for more than 30 years. Greg originally founded Koenig Vineyards, helping establish what became one of the most familiar names in Idaho wine. Today, the Koenigs are taking a new chapter in their winemaking story with Devil’s Bedstead. The winery is built around two vineyard properties with some serious history of their own: the Koenig Estate Vineyard, planted in 1996, and the historic Fraser Vineyard, which the Koenigs acquired in 2014. In cowboy terms: It's a new horse in the herd—but it comes from good stock.

Small Production, Big Personality

Devil’s Bedstead produces fewer than 1,000 cases of wine each year, keeping things on the smaller-production side. That's something we love about Idaho wine country. You don't always need a giant production facility and a fancy corporate logo to make great wine. Sometimes you just need good grapes, a little know-how, and someone who cares about what's going into the bottle.

Devil’s Bedstead's lineup includes both reds and whites, with wines such as:

  • Dry Rosé

  • Viognier

  • Merlot

  • Fraser Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Cuvée Alden

  • Cuvée Amelia Reserve Syrah

The wines are crafted by Greg Koenig, with several of the red wines receiving time in French oak.

In other words, these aren't wines that were thrown together quicker than a cowboy trying to get out of a rainstorm. There's some time and attention going into these bottles.

Another Reason to Ride Up the Slope

If you've spent much time on the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, you know one of the best parts is that there's always something new to discover. You can visit your old favorites, find a new favorite, argue with your friends about which wine was the best, and then conveniently decide you need to go back and conduct “further research.” We're not here to judge. Now you can add Devil’s Bedstead to that research itinerary.

Located on Hoskins Road, it's a great addition to a day spent exploring the wineries and vineyards of Sunnyslope. Bringing your whole crew? That's where we come in!

You Drink. We'll Drive.

Here's our favorite part of the equation: You don't have to drive. Western Mountain Wine Tours takes you out to the Sunnyslope Wine Trail so you can spend the day enjoying Idaho wine country without having to nominate one poor soul as the designated driver. Because nobody wants to hear: “I'll just have one.”

Instead, gather your friends, climb aboard, and let our local drivers handle the roads while you handle the important stuff—like deciding which bottle you're taking home.

We're Idaho locals. We know the roads, we know the area, and we're pretty comfortable navigating the Slope. You bring the boots. We'll bring the ride.
